Air pollution is a growing concern in many cities around the world, and Tbilisi, Georgia is no exception. The city has been facing increasing levels of air pollution over the past decade, with significant negative impacts on the health and well-being of its inhabitants.

The main air pollutant in Tbilisi is PM 2.5. PM stands for Particle Matter. PM 2.5 is fine particle matter, as these are particles that are smaller than 2.5 μm in their diameter.

Polluted air is known to cause strokes, as well as lung and heart problems if one is exposed to it for a longer time. This develops over time and mostly leads to these problems in older people. But it’s the children who are especially vulnerable. By being exposed to pollution the development of the brain also slows down and is damaged. This again mostly affects children, because their brains are developing and growing the most in the first few years of their lives. Because of these crucial changes that are happening in their brains, they are therefore the most sensitive to damaging particles making their way into the brain.

That is why it is so important for us at Tbilisi Hills that we are located in a green, ecological environment. We have a lot of greenery in our territory, which provides fresh oxygen and soaks up some of the possible pollution. We are located up in the hills of the city. It is a close drive from the center to us, however, during this drive you get totally out of the city bustle and into the oasis of nature. Being located up above the city means that the air circulates good, because of the wind. It is much harder for the air to circulate in this way down in Tbilisi, because of its geographical location — being in a valley i.e. surrounded by the mountains on all sides. It is crucial in this city to live in a place which is better for your health and the development of your children, so that they can grow up to have a quality life.

As the summer is coming, the air pollution levels really take a hit. This is because of the warm temperature of the air, but also because the air is very often more stagnant during warm periods. These problems will only increase with time, for now. That is also due to cars only increasing in the city. And for Georgia to completely go over to solutions like only having electrical cars in the city, will without a doubt take a lot of time. So, whilst moving forward with the important structural changes that need to be taken, we can focus on the already existing solutions.

One potential solution to the problem of air pollution in Tbilisi is to live in a gated community with green surroundings and fresh air. These communities are designed to provide residents with a clean and healthy environment, away from the pollution and noise of the city. They often feature parks, gardens, and other green spaces, which helps to improve air quality and reduce the risk of health problems. Fresh air also improves sleep quality, which in turn contributes to increased energy levels as well as better mental health.
